Come Hear RENEWAL CHORUS Sing at Pompanuck Farm!

Pompanuck Farm will be hosting a concert performance by Renewal Chorus on Sunday, Jan 8. 2 PM in The Round House at Pompanuck Farm.

The Renewal Chorus is a small, cooperatively-led ensemble of friends who first sang together as teenagers with the world music group Village Harmony. Since 2007, Renewal has assembled in the winter for a concert tour of the Northeast, performing traditional polyphony from around the world. This winter, they will embark upon their sixth tour, including a concert at Pompanuck!

Their concert features propelling rhythms and wide-open chords of American Shape Note music, early 20th century men's gospel, silvery tones and elaborate melodies of Corsican and Bulgarian trio songs and ancient polyphony from Caucasus Georgia. Each concert also showcases new and classic songs written by New England composers.

Many of the Renewal singers have traveled abroad to study ethnic singing traditions first hand. Village Harmony co-director Larry Gordon praises their “tight and unified ensemble sound” and “wealth of experience in the wide range of world singing styles,” calling them an assembly of “many of the finest singers among the recent graduates of Village Harmony’s traveling teen ensembles.” This concert is not to be missed!

19th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Potluck and Celebration of the Arts

Every Memorial Day since 1994, Pompanuck Farm has hosted an “open house” event - a tribute to this day of remembrance and to the people of our greater community. The public is invited to enjoy a day-long arts festival and tour Pompanuck’s buildings and grounds. To celebrate the 20^th anniversary ground breaking for the Roundhouse, there will be a special event to raise money for life skills retreats for young adults and to replace our greenhouse. Each $250 raised will provide one young adult the opportunity to attend a 3-day/2-night retreat.

There will be a raffle drawing with a chance to win three fabulous prizes: 1) an overnight at Pompanuck with dinner, wine, live music, and sumptuous breakfast prepared by Pompanuck chefs valued at $1,000. 2) A Spa Day at Pompanuck for four people, with hike, gourmet picnic lunch, therapeutic massage, sauna and swim for three couples valued at $700. 3) Two tickets and back stage passes to the Broadway musical, Chicago, at the Ambassador Theater in New York City valued at $300.

Raffle tickets are being sold for $5 each or five for $20.

There will be a silent auction throughout the day with an opportunity to bid on a variety of items including a painting by Arleen Targan, two Hubbard Hall subscriptions, each good for 3 plays, and a gift package from Over the Moon Beads and Gifts.

Over the years the Memorial Day Picnic at Pompanuck has become an annual festival of community building; play, meal sharing and a performance showcase for musicians and artists in varied media whose offerings often reflect the spirit of peace. Some of this year’s performers are: The Red Lions, Swear and Shake, Bruce Williamson and Friends and numerous local regional musicians.

With the beginning of 2010 Lisa and Scott began a new project at Pompanuck: the Round House Bakery at Pompanuck Farm. What began as a fulfillment of a request by the Cambridge Coop to bake breads and cookies for sale, the bakery project grew last year, by request, to bring bakery goods to other local stores and then to local farmers markets. The requests for goods rapidly outgrew the facilities in the Roundhouse and so Lisa and Scott transformed the former wood shop into a full-scale commercial bakery.

Lisa and Scott have been long time, passionate bakers, (for many years, Lisa has been well known for her amazing, large-scale, sculptural cakes for weddings and celebrations). Round House Bakery began this year as a natural extension of their explorations in sustainable living and right livelihood. Please find us at the following stores and farmers markets:

Since January of this year, the Round House Bakery has been supplying artisan breads, cookies, muffins, cakes, granolas, frozen pizza doughs and many other baked goods to Cambridge Coop (Wed., Fri.) Spice n' Nice in Bennington VT (Wed.), Wayside General Store in Arlington VT (Fri.) , Hiland Hall School (Wed.) and Shaftsbury General Store (occasionally) in Shaftsbury, VT and at Farmers Markets in Cambridge (Sundays 10-2) and Glens Falls (Saturdays 8-noon).

In an effort to establish the Bakery on solid footing and to take time to reassess Pompanuck's programs, the Board of Directors of Pompanuck Farm has established a year of sabbatical from programs and concerts. We are halfway through this sabbatical year and the assessment continues to provide us with the time and energy to look at our programs in an effort to create a Pompanuck that is more effective, efficient and sustaining for our local, regional community. During 2011 we are offering only test programs and a few longtime retreats to make sure our assessment is clear and our small budget for the year is met.

There is Still Time to "Join In"...

Dear Friends, We send you warm winter wishes for an inspiring New Year. This last minute appeal is to remind folks that there is still time to Join In and make a contribution to Pompanuck Farm's Programs. 2010 was a year of learning at Pompanuck, from Enrichment Programs, Living Skills Workshops for Alternative Sentencing, Camping Journeys with St. John's Home for Boys, Our work with Mt. Anthony High School students and the mentoring of young adults and teens in working with younger children.

Our gardens produced most of the healthy ingredients for the meals we offered our retreatants. We welcomed a number of schools and colleges to tour and talk about our programs and environmentally sound buildings and grounds.

2010 was hard on our budget as we were under-enrolled in our children's programs due to the wiltering economy that we have all been affected by. We ran these programs while underenrolled because of our commitments to our young staff and to the children we serve. As a result, 2011 will be a year of discovery at Pompanuck when we will be reassessing all of our activities and programs, in an effort to ensure that Pompanuck evolves into a more effective, efficient and vital organization. The Lottery is a live performance piece, based on the short story by Shirley Jackson. Working with local actors and performers, Producer/Director Wendy Bordwell is bringing this production to Hubbard Hall as well as to the Georgi Museum, SalemArtWorks, Bennington College, Pompanuck Farm and other stops in our area.

Join in while the townsfolk gather, as they have for years, to attend the traditional lottery. A bake sale, live music, and classic fair games are all part of the experience. Inevitably, things take a dark turn...

The production features musicians Barry Hyman and Nathan Knowles, providing live music that accompanies The Lottery. Bluegrass style music is timeless, and is present in our history, yet still present in our present. It also gives a festive, organic sound to our production. Musician Barry Hyman is also the son of Shirley Jackson and Laurence Hyman.

About the production, Wendy writes:

"I was in the ninth grade when “The Lottery“, by Shirley Jackson, struck me like lightening . I had just moved from a busy suburban area of Connecticut, to a more rural farm town near the shoreline. Adjusting wasn’t easy, and the short story spoke volumes to me.

This outdoor production is touring the region during the Fall of 2010. The set is the town itself, with the feel of a County Fair: festive, light, and busy. Amidst the commotion of the crowd (our audience) is talk of the pending Lottery, a longstanding tradition in town. Some folks hustle to finish projects, submit a pie in the bake-off, or gather the children for a picnic dinner. Bluegrass music is accompanying the commotion. A strong sense of community and energy radiates as the townsfolk gather for the climactic lottery."

Hello folks! Pompanuck Farm is excited to be hosting a special event next weekend! On Sunday, August 29, national touring band and recording artists, Khann will be doing a special one night only performance here in Cambridge.

Khann is of the Metal/Hardcore/Screamo/Southern genre and you can check out their music here http://www.myspace.com/khannn . If you are a fan of this genre, or have ever been curious about it, this will be a great opportunity to experience this band in the beautiful setting that Pompanuck has to offer. Lead guitarist, Jake Smith is the son of local musician, Deena Chappell. This night promises to fun and exciting!

Khann’s show will last about 45 minutes and we are hoping to have a small acoustic music jam afterward so bring your instruments and hang out with the band.

Pompanuck is asking a $5 donation. The proceeds will be divided between Pompanuck Educational programs and Khann’s travel fund.

Because we are encouraging music lovers of all ages to come and enjoy this unique show, this will be an alcohol free event. The show starts at 7pm! See you there!

TWO WILD MUSHROOM WALKS with SUE VAN HOOK

9 am - 12 noon

Please join mycologist, Sue Van Hook, for a hands-on day in the field collecting fungi, making spore prints, and learning stature types for easy identification of the common edible and medicinal fungi. In the morning we will be introduced to how to collect mushrooms while we foray at Pompanuck Farm and the surrounding State Forest. Over lunch Sue will teach the major groups of fungi and we'll spend the afternoon practicing identification on our collections. Please bring any mushrooms or fungi from home, a collecting basket, a dull knife or garden trowel, waxed paper, a bag lunch, water and any sunscreen or repellents you desire. Please wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts for tick protection. Cost is $10 for each walk.

Sue Van Hook can most often be found on hands and knees in search of fungi in Skidmore's North Woods. She engages students in various mycoremediation projects as part of the first year biology majors course. Using fungal mycelium she and students have worked to restore segments of trail and degrade stable waste. She collaborates with researchers at RPI in Troy, NY growing fungi for "green" products. In 2007, Sue produced Treasures in the North Woods: a guide to the natural campus at Skidmore College in collaboration with students, staff and faculty spouses. As a Senior Teaching Associate, she currently teaches laboratories for Unity of Life (BI 105) and Diversity of Life (BI 106). She chairs the Campus Environment Committee, working on campus sustainability and stewardship of the North Woods.
Sue earned her M.A. in Biology and B.A. in Botany and French from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She worked as a naturalist and preserve manager for the Nature Conservancy in northern California and as Stewardship Director for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust before coming to Skidmore in 1992.

All roads will converge at Pompanuck Farm on July 23 as NYC-based folk/pop pianist and singer-songwriter collaborates with versatile woodwind artist and Bennington Faculty member Bruce Williamson in concert. The two became fast friends at the farm almost exactly one year ago following Dagmar's CD release concert, and within a few minutes, in one of those "small-world!" conversations, they began to scheme about a chance to share the stage. Dagmar is known for her lyrical depth, vividly intricate piano accompaniments, and honest vocal delivery. Her third full-length album, "Let the Waves Come in Threes," was produced by Bennington native, Ben Wittman. Ranging from an upbeat sea shanty to a hopeful soldier's lament, the album held Top 20 positions in the National Roots Music Report "Folk" Charts for 6 consecutive weeks, peaking at #6, and was selected for A-List Artist on High Plains Public Radio, and #1 Airplay on WVIA. Williamson has performed worldwide with artists as diverse as Art Lande, Fred Hersch, Gary Peacock, Bobby McFerron, American Ballet Theatre Orchestra, and NY City Opera Orchestra. Also a composer, he has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Dagmar and Williamson's collaborative debut promises to be an evening of heartfelt creativity, beauty and imagination.

Pompanuck Farm is presenting recording artist Marty Wendell on Saturday, July 31st at 7pm.
Wendell is a unique artist who has shared the stage with a long list of legendary artists including Arlo Guthrie, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. He is one of a select group of artists to record in the famous Sun Studio in Memphis, TN where Elvis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash as well as Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and B.B. King recorded their first records. Many consider this the place where Rock and Roll was born. Having reconnected with his rockabilly roots at Sun Studio, Marty recorded the album “Rockabilly Heart” which met with much critical acclaim, including being featured in France’s leading Rockabilly magazine.
Wherever he and his band perform they remind their audience just how good genuine rockabilly music can be. His concerts include many classics as well as some of his original songs. Pompanuck Farm is presents “Italian Songbook” in concert with Khabu Doug Young and Bruce Williamson, featuring vocalist, Elena Camerin.

The evening will feature Italian songs primarily from the 50’s & 60’s, as interpreted by consummate jazz improvisers. Venetian vocalist, Elena Camerin (voice, electronics), chose and arranged popular music that is near and dear to her heart, including songs sung to her by her grandmother in the kitchen while also passing along traditional cuisine such as Gnocchi al Pomodoro. Audience members will delight and savour the distinctive sound flavours of Italy simultaneously transposed and reframed by the unabashedly American roots of long-time collaborators Bruce Williamson (woodwinds, piano, percussion) and Khabu Doug Young (guitars, ukulele, cavaquinho).

The “Italian Songbook” project was conceived after two musicians from two different continents met in 2009 and discovered that, even though they had very different backgrounds, both had a great love for approaching vocal repertoire and improvised music in new and exciting ways. Jazz meets Italian love songs … with a bit of electronica thrown in for fun.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Elena Camerin born in Venice, living in NYC since 2008, began her musical studies on piano and later began studying voice at the "Thelonious Monk" jazz school. Shortly thereafter, she began to study opera under soprano Francesca Scaini. In 1994, she joined the gospel choir "Venice Gospel Ensemble" as soloist; she often works in performances with Walter Sabato, actor and director in shows. She worked as "living installation" at the Biennale 2003, in Venice, for the artist Tino Sehgal. In July 2004, she won Best Student award at the Michele Hendricks' vocal workshop at Spoleto, with the Spoleto Arts Symposia. In 2005, she recorded under her name the CD "GRAZIE DEI FIORI?" under the label "Caligola Records", dedicated to the Italian song of the 50s.

Khabu Doug Young using ukuleles, guitars, cavaquinho, harmonica, and voice, Khabu creates music in a spirit of collaboration and interaction, exploring the continuum between improvisation and composition, sculpting sounds into musical journeys of the unknown. Born Doug Young in Lubbock, TX, he grew up in Houston. He moved to New York City to work with artists from all disciplines: theatre, dance, spoken word, film, as well as musicians of many styles (often with unique instrumentation).

Reed player & pianist Bruce Williamson was active in the San Francisco music scene until moving to NYC in the mid-80s, playing with jazz artists such as Art Lande, Mark Isham, Benny Green & Bobby McFerron. Over the years, Bruce has performed with artists such as Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, Gary Peacock, Jack Mcduff, Dave Douglas, Paul McCandless and many others. He can be heard on over 50 recordings and has a new quartet CD (with Lande) called Standard Transmission coming out August 2010.

In the NYC theatre world, Bruce has worked with director Julie Taymor for the last 15 years (Juan Darien-1996, The Lion King-1998, The Green Bird-2000, Grendel-2006), and is currently rehearsing with Taymor and rock-star Bono on the new Broadway production of Spiderman, due to open in Fall 2010. Bruce can also be heard on many filmscores by Elliot Goldenthal, including Frida (Academy-award winning score, 2003), Across The Universe and most recently Public Enemies (accompanying singer Diana Krall on a ballad version of “Bye Bye Blackbird”).

Bruce has appeared in clubs and festivals worldwide (performing in Turkey for the first two weeks of June 2010), has received multiple grants for Jazz Composition and is currently on the music faculty at Bennington College, Vermont.

Pompanuck Farm will host a week filled with art, music, nature studies, useful skills and play, lead by artists and educators, Lisa and Scott Carrino and the Pompanuck Staff. Kids will leave this program with beautiful art work and new and exciting physical and useful skills.

At Pompanuck, children learn through contact with nature with help from music, literature, and art. They have the freedom to play independently, in small groups or in large games and the opportunity to have many rewarding interpersonal experiences.

The goal of the Enrichment Staff is to enable children to maximize their talents, creativity, skills and character through plenty of individual attention. Children thrive on the personal support, the interaction between new friends and the community spirit that occurs.

This summer we will be joined by guest teachers who will share their expertise in a variety of art forms. Each week of Enrichment we will offer kids the opportunity to focus on a different theme, or, if your child isn’t interested in the focus activity being offered she/he can continue to participate in any of the ongoing activities.

This year we will feature performances by Dirty Old Strings, All That's Fallen, Ferrilyn Sourdiffe, Adam McHeffey, Barry Hyman and Lucas Sconzo and the Jam Band, Bernice Lewis and Scott Carrino.

This year, we will again offer our homegrown and homemade products including a plant and tag sale. All proceeds will fund Pompanuck programs for children and families throughout the year.

In the Big Yurt/Mini Top, learn bird inspired flying partner acrobatics and practice basic circus skills.

Scott Carrino has been studying Chinese calligraphy for the past 17 years and offers this workshop for participants to learn the techniques of large brush painting of characters and the meaning behind each brush stroke.

Participants will learn proper brush and ink technique and leave with an understanding of at numerous meaningful characters. No experience is necessary, as we learn to play as children with energy and joyful fun. Please wear dark clothing.

Pompanuck Farm will host a dance benefit for VOSCA. Music and dancing will begin at 7pm, and a short intermission when VOSCA members will talk a bit about their efforts.

Dirty Ol' Strings is an acoustic trio from Cambridge, including Deena Chappell (mandolin, vocals) Dave Cuite (stand-up bass, vocals) and David Lawlor (guitar, vocals). The group formed in the late fll of '08 and has been steadily gaining recognition in the area for their strong vocals and instrumental prowess. They perform an energetic mix of contemporary and traditional bluegrass, swing, and folk with a playful air and occassional sardonic humor: a fun band to experience live.

This year, VOSCA with 20 CCS students (mostly seniors) and six chaperones will be headed back to an area near Loris, SC where they will again be rebuilding homes of the very impoverished, and hopefully have some quality time with children.

VOSCA has three other fundraisers underway: a "Many Prizes" Raffle, a car wash at Stewart's on March 27th, and a Chicken BBQ on March 28th at the Legion (4-6pm). Winter Study for Summer Forays

Mycologist, Sue Van Hook, will lead two hour mushroom forays throughout the spring and summer. You are invited to attend as many as you'd like, but first you need to learn the basics identifying the groups of fungi. If you attend the winter lecture, then you have access to the summer collecting forays. This is to avoid reteaching the basics each weekend, so you can really advance your identification skills and enjoy more species.

Be sure to bring a notebook and pen. Sue will have copies of "How to Identify Mushrooms to Genus I: Macroscopic Features" by David L. Largent for sale ($20).

This introductory lecture will be offered again in March and April at different locations.

Pompanuck Farm will hold its Spring Pizza/Jazz Big Night! This is the first of Pompanuck's music and meal nights of 2010 will happen with enough great music and pizza to take us through the Spring! Come hear fine Jazz and enjoy wood-fired pizza in the Roundhouse at Pompanuck in a benefit night for Pompanuck's programs.

Headlining this evening's jazz will be vocalist, Leah Carroll (Greenwich, NY) and Bruce Williamson with local Bennington College and New York City musicians.

Leah Carroll started training classically at fourteen, but loves jazz because it's limitless and liberating - no boundaries. She has been performing at various venues in the capital region for the last five years, exploring many styles of music such as folk, jazz, soul, funk, blues and latin jazz.

Multi-instumentalist, Bruce Williamson, co-founder at Pompanuck. Bruce was active
in the San Francisco jazz scene until moving to New York City in the mid-1980s. Bruce has performed with Mark Levine, Pete & Sheila Escovedo, Bobby McFerrin, Benny Green and was a member of the experimental jazz group in various New York City clubs and has been a featured soloist in Japan and Europe. His most recent CD "Big City Magic" on Timeless Records features well-known trumpeter Randy Brecker and Bruce's compositions for jazz septet. Bruce is presently on the music faculty at Bennington College, VT and has been a jazz clinician throughout the U.S. and Europe. He divides his time between NYC and Cambridge,NY, where he is founding member of Pompanuck Farm Institute. Bruce an his friends can be heard locally at our Pizza Jazz benefit nights.

Proceeds from this event fund our children's programs that we host thoughout the year.

Dance Party Benefit for Haiti featuring Roadside Blues Band

Here at Pompanuck, we focus much of our efforts locally, but its times like the events that have taken place in Haiti, we consider a global outreach and support people in great need, particularly, its youngest victims, the children.

So, come dance and have a great time while supporting a great cause. Our dance party will featuring local band, the Roadside Blues Band who will donate their music for the evening. The Roadside Blues consists of Willie Eldorado Lanchantin (guitarist), Michael Kraus (vocals & harmonica), Peter Maine (drums & vocals) Mitch Throop (stand up bass).

The Roadside Blues Band captures the raw excitement of the early blues legends of the the 50's and 60's. The stand up bass and sealed back drum kit, the early Gibson, and the mouth harp blend to create a sound that is truly authentic.

Suggested minimum donation at the door $5/students, $10/adults.

In the past, we have held benefits before, such as a 2002 benefit for the Iraqi children, funds were donated to Doctors Without Borders and Teaching Tolerance. This time, we plan to again send financial support to Doctors Without Borders, as well as, UNICEF. All proceeds will go directly to support the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Refreshments will be available.

Singer/Songwriters Night !

Pompanuck Farm is presenting a monthly songwriters exchange on Sunday, January 17th at 5 - 7 pm. Hosted by Scott Carrino and Deena Chappell Smith, this month’s event will showcase singer/songwriter Gary Moon. Gary hails from Lake George, in upstate New York, who began his musical career at venues in the Lake George region performing the songs of popular artists of the singer-songwriter genre as diverse as James Taylor, Paul Simon, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jim Croce and Arlo Guthrie, all the while sharpening his own writing style and drawing on these influences to craft his own original compositional style. In 2005, Gary released “Orion”, his first CD of original material. In 2006, Gary was a finalist in the Solarfest songwriting competition held in in Tinmouth, VT. Currently, Gary is working on a second CD project.

The artists will share original material with the audience and then discuss their songwriting process in an open forum setting. Audience members and the songwriters are encouraged to participate in a lively, in-depth conversation about the creative process of forming original music.

Scott Carrino: Scott spent his early years listening to and singing along with the radio and "playing" percussion on whatever surface that he had nearby. Scott started writing songs the moment he picked up a guitar at age seventeen. Often, in those early days when he attempted to learn a favorite song, a heartfelt song of his own would emerge. He has surrendered to the process and knows that songs will come through him when he is open and able to hear them. Scott continues to play percussion any chance he can and was a founding member of "Conundrum" a local percussion ensemble made up of drumming friends and their drums and a very popular local jam band in the 1990's.

Deena Chappell Smith: Born into a family of musicians, Deena Chappell Smith has been performing professionally since the age of fourteen. Her vast musical background includes performances in Bluegrass, Rock and Roll, Folk, Swing and Jazz. Deena was also the co-creator of the popular “Musical Chairs” children’s program where she has led countless children of all ages and backgrounds through the songwriting and recording process. However, her career as a singer/songwriter is just beginning. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at Goddard College where she is creating a body of music that reflects her understanding of and experience with the ‘voices’ of archetypal theory. www.deenachappell.com

Follow signs to the Round House where you can chat with neighbors or enjoy a cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa and sample some of our delicious baked goods: fresh hearth baked rosemary bread, rich raisin studded babkas, Italian hazelnut biscotti, almond meringues, and our “surprise ginger snaps”. Children are invited to decorate their own gingerbread cookies. You’re also invited to take a walking tour of the buildings and grounds or a hike in the Pompanuck woods.

This season the Pompanuck Store has some wonderful new additions to our collection of homemade items as well as many traditional favorites like colorful Mexican shopping bags made from recycled plastics, gingerbread candlesticks, cornhusk angels, birch bark barrels, and industrial strength potholders.

There is a new line of jewelry, accessories, and house wares, crafted by talented local high school students. Also available is framed Chinese Calligraphy, an art taught during our Tai Ji workshops here at Pompanuck. They convey with powerful brush strokes the beauty of the natural setting in which they were created.

(Cambridge, NY) On Saturday, November 7th, Pompanuck Farm will hold its Fall Pizza/Jazz Big Night! From 6:30pm to 11:00pm, the last of Pompanuck’s Music-and-Meal nights of 2009 will happen with enough great music and pizza to take us through Thanksgiving and into the New Year. Come hear fine Jazz and enjoy wood-fired pizza in the Roundhouse at Pompanuck in a benefit night for Pompanuck’s programs and children’s scholarship fund.

Featured this evening will be three outstanding jazz singers from the surrounding area: Jeanne O’Connor from Saratoga NY, Evita Cobo from Pownal VT and Leah Carroll from Greenwich NY. Each of these singers has a personal and soulful approach to singing, whether it’s a toe-tapping Gershwin favorite, a tender ballad, a Brazilian classic or a funky blues. Featured musicians will include Pompanuck’s own Bruce Williamson (sax, flute, piano) as well as Mal Stein (drums), Bob Bowen (bass) and Khabu Doug Young (guitar), all from New York City.
There are always surprise musical guests in this Pompanuck event that has been popular for over 15 years.

Jeanne O’Connor (vocalist) - has brought her jazz singing to New York's Blue Note, Elaine's, Sweet Rhythm, the Rainbow Room, Smoke, and many other jazz clubs. Jeanne was recently a featured vocalist on opening night of "Midsummer Night's Swing" at Lincoln Center, sharing the stage with Nicholas Payton. In the New York Capital Region, Jeanne has sung at the legendary Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, Justin's jazz club in Albany, and the Saratoga Springs Arts Festival. As a member of the String of Pearls jazz female vocal trio, Jeanne has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, and other venues in the U.S. and abroad. The New York Times calls Jeanne “a captivating jazz singer, “ while the Albany Times Union, says, "Exquisite... a buttery alto and nimble, graceful phrasing.”

Evita Cobo (vocalist) – has performed both locally and in NYC for the last 10 years. She has studied (and performed) with jazz divas Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton & Rhiannon. Her 2004 debut CD “Invitation” received critical acclaim.

Leah Carroll (vocalist) - started training classically at fourteen, but loves jazz because it's limitless and liberating - no boundaries. She has been performing at various venues in the capital region for the last five years, exploring many styles of music such as folk, jazz, soul, funk, blues and latin jazz.

Mal Stein (drums) – is a versatile and eclectic drummer/ percussionist, playing full-time in New York City and around the world. He loves all kinds of music; jazz, blues, funk and Middle Eastern. He works with dancers (both Joffery ballerinas and Belly Dancers), curates weekend jazz at the Cupping Room in Soho, NYC and tours with the Middle-Eastern group Taksim.

Bruce Williamson (sax, flute, piano) – most often heard in this area with long-time collaborator Art Lande (piano) or at Bennington College where he teaches jazz courses, Bruce has also performed with Fred Hersch, Bobby McFerrin, Gary Peacock, Jack McDuff, Dave Douglas, Paul McCandless and many others. Bruce has received two NEA grants for Jazz Compoistion. He can be heard on dozens of jazz recordings and over a dozen filmscores, the most recent being “Public Enemies” (accompanying Diana Krall singing “Bye Bye Blackbird”).

Bob Bowen (bass) - After moving to NYC more than 12 years ago from Cincinnati Ohio, Bob has performed with many notable and legendary musicians around the world including Lee Konitz, Jack Wilkins, Tony Trischka, Mike Clark, Joe Lovano, John Hicks, Art Lande and Matt Wilson.

Khabu Doug Young (guitar/ukulele) - Originally from the great state of Texas, Khabu has played with a remarkable assortment creative NYC musicians in many different ensembles including OK/OK, Slog, and the E String Band. Recently he has been expanding the realm of solo ukulele playing and you can see some of that work at the Ukulele Cabaret (http://www.ukulelecabaret.com)

About Bernice:

"For me, it's about the songs, each different, each a well thought out message, each a labor of love," says Bernice Lewis. Her newest CD, She Undoes, (2006) was Recorded in Nashville and produced by Grammy Award winner Charlie Chadwick (Suzi Bogguss, John Carter Cash, Kathy Mattea). It features a duet with fellow singer songwriter Cliff Eberhardt and a jazzy a cappella version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You," in addition to a collection of originals.

With three decades of performing festivals, concert halls, coffeehouses, colleges, and house concerts, along with a half dozen acclaimed CDs, Bernice Lewis has built a solid national fan base. She is also a published poet, a producer, and an educator extraordinaire. Lewis -- who studied vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, guitar technique with Alex DeGrassi and Guy van Duser, and songwriting with Roseanne Cash and Cris Williamson -- has been a featured performer on NPR's Mountain Stage program, as well as at the Kennedy Center. In 1987, she was a finalist in the prestigious New Folk Songwriting Contest at the Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival, where she continues to be a main stage favorite. Her ballad, "Bridges That Hold," was included in Peter, Paul and Mary's Lifelines video (PBS). She was featured in Yoga Journal for her work with sound and yoga, and has shared the stage with many renowned artists, including Dar Williams, Dixie Chicks, Patty Griffin, Pete Seegar, Ellis Paul, Rory Block, Livingston Taylor, Odetta, Christine Lavin, Marty Sexton, Patty Larkin, Catie Curtis... it's a long list.

Bernice currently teaches Songwriting at Williams College and Colorado College, as well as at schools and retreat centers. She has also been an Artist in Residence and workshop presenter at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, Kripalu Center for Yoga in Lenox, MA, and Esalen Institute in Big Sur. In 2008, she was awarded an Artist in Residence position by the National Park Service.

Bernice is also becoming widely known for her History Alive presentation, a multi-media discussion of her family's emigration from Nazi Germany, specifically designed for Junior and Senior High School classrooms. Her song, "Ways to Survive," won an award from the American Zionist Movement in 1996. Her writings and recordings will be archived in the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. In 2008. Bernice signed with the TV and film division of Shadow Mountain Music in Nashville. She has had a thirty-year daily yoga practice, loves good coffee, and her religion is the Grand Canyon.

This cd is full of original and astounding music, beautifully produced by Eric Geoffrey Belcher, and with lyrics that will make you want to sing, dance and reflect...

Who knows what lurks beneath the surface of our consciousness? Deena Chappell set out on a journey to find out. Creating a framework built on the philosophies of Swiss psychologist Carl Jung and famous mythologist, Joseph Campbell, Chappell created a delightful, insightful, and very listenable album of nine songs that track her progression through the quintessential search to meet and greet the Archetypes of the unconscious.

What are Archetypes? Well, that’s a question that can be answered in many different ways depending on who is doing the answering. Here’s one way of describing them. The Archetypes are images and experiences that we collectively share, although we more often then not undergo our encounters with them as individuals. An easily recognizable and understood Archetype is the Trickster. Trickster is ancient and exists in all cultures. A shape-shifter, Trickster can appear as a clown or a jester. In Native American traditions, he sometimes appears as a coyote or a raven. As do all archetypes, the Trickster serves a function. He shows up when we have taken ourselves too seriously. She appears when we are so distracted by our own drama that we’ve lost sight of the fact that life is but a cosmic joke. A popular incarnation of the Trickster in American culture is Bugs Bunny.

In her genre-hopping album, ‘Voices Of The Archetypes’ Chappell dances, cries and laughs her way down an enchanted path toward individuation. Brilliantly produced by Eric Geoffrey Belcher, this album pops with tasty audio bites that bring the story to life. The sequence of the enchanted tracks maps the journey. The story begins with a realization of the cost of living an inauthentic life for a false sense of security. Corporate marks a moment in time when a life-altering decision to jump off of the proverbial cliff is made. Big Green Bus speaks to the beginning of a wonderful, psychedelic-like journey to a new home. Song for Child, a piano based ballad, honors the child within and without. Cruel Mistake is a gospel-toned confrontation to blame and sorrow. Shadow Thing emerges in a pissed-off frenzy of screaming Sabbath guitars and Chappell spills dark, tortured sexually charged lyrics; parental guidance suggested. Shadow Aphrodite is a twisted little swing number that coaxes the ghost of the infamous man-eater. Reminiscent of the Beatles, The Only Time is Now is a lush, ethereal homage to the sacred voice that reminds us of our own divinity and keeps us on our path. The Trickster is a snappy, danceable tune with clever lyrics and a killer fiddle track. The album is summed up beautifully with an acoustic fairy-tale, Pandora.

Because there are so many different styles of music on this album, it would be difficult to categorize it. In a class by itself, ‘Voices Of The Archetypes’ is one of those pieces of true, honest art that comes along only once in a while.

Beginning Mushroom Identification Workshop

Saturday August 22, 9 am - 4 pm.
Please join mycologist, Sue Van Hook, for a hands-on day in the field collecting fungi, making spore prints, and learning stature types for easy identification of the common edible and medicinal fungi. In the morning we will be introduced to how to collect mushrooms while we foray at Pompanuck Farm and the surrounding State Forest. Over lunch Sue will teach the major groups of fungi and we'll spend the afternoon practicing identification on our collections. Please bring any mushrooms or fungi from home, a collecting basket, a dull knife or garden trowel, waxed paper, a bag lunch, water and any sunscreen or repellents you desire. Please wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts for tick protection. Cost is $25

Sue Van Hook can most often be found on hands and knees in search of fungi in Skidmore's North Woods. She engages students in various mycoremediation projects as part of the first year biology majors course. Using fungal mycelium she and students have worked to restore segments of trail and degrade stable waste. She collaborates with researchers at RPI in Troy, NY growing fungi for "green" products. In 2007, Sue produced Treasures in the North Woods: a guide to the natural campus at Skidmore College in collaboration with students, staff and faculty spouses. As a Senior Teaching Associate, she currently teaches laboratories for Unity of Life (BI 105) and Diversity of Life (BI 106). She chairs the Campus Environment Committee, working on campus sustainability and stewardship of the North Woods.
Sue earned her M.A. in Biology and B.A. in Botany and French from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She worked as a naturalist and preserve manager for the Nature Conservancy in northern California and as Stewardship Director for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust before coming to Skidmore in 1992.

The British born, NYC-based pianist/singer-songwriter celebrates the release of her third album, “Let the Waves Come in Threes.” Pompanuck Farm is located at 494 Chestnut Hill Road in Cambridge, NY. Song writer Jennifer Kimball says, “From the opening moments of ‘Let the Waves Come in Threes,’ Anna’s piano spills out over the band in fantastic, hooky, cascading lines and I am swept in. It’s a beautiful ride.” The title track is an upbeat sea shanty, which tells the vivid tale of a girl whose treasured diary has been swept up in a wild storm. She looks out across the ocean for meaning and direction as a mysterious voice rises from the waves. The album features twelve piano-driven folk/pop songs, lyrical string arrangements, spotless production by Ben Wittman (Jonatha Brooke, Patty Larkin), breathtaking soundscapes by guitarist Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega), vocalist Theo Bleckmann (Laurie Anderson), and the wholesome, unpredictable and refreshing voice of Anna Dagmar.

Since 2001, Dagmar has become known from NY to Stockholm for her virtuosity as a pianist, singer and songwriter. She has released three albums, published a printed songbook, and has toured in cities such as London, Berlin, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Boston. Dagmar has been selected to perform on special occasions for luminaries such as world-class photographer, Annie Leibovitz, former Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, and Swedish Nobel Prize Winner, Torsten Weisel. Every Memorial Day since 1994, Pompanuck Farm has hosted an “open house” event - a tribute to this day of remembrance and to the people of our greater community. The public is invited to enjoy a day-long arts festival and tour Pompanuck’s buildings and grounds. An outdoor stage is constructed and tents and tables are set for a community wide potluck sharing and networking.

Over the years the Memorial Day Picnic at Pompanuck has become an annual festival of community building; play, meal sharing and a performance showcase for musicians and artists in varied media whose offerings often reflect the spirit of peace. Some of this year’s performers are: Natural History, The Dirty Old Strings, Road House Blues Band, Ferrilyn Sourdiffe, Tracey Forest, Scott Carrino and a special presentation by members of the Enrichment Program – “The Pompanuck Circus”.

A special request… Pompanuck is planning to have a plant sale on this day to raise funds for our programs… If you are thinning out your flower beds and would like to bring a few potted plants to donate to the sale, we would greatly appreciate it!

Pompanuck Farm Presents Songwriters Exchange May 10th

(White Creek, NY) Pompanuck Farm is presenting a monthly songwriters exchange on Sunday, April 5th at 6:30 pm. Hosted by Scott Carrino and Deena Chappell Smith, this month’s event will showcase young songwriters, Tim Blair and Paul Brotchie.

Born and raised in Arlington, VT. Tim Blair started doing gigs in high school playing guitar in a rock and roll band. He was introduced to Bluegrass at college in Burlington and took up playing the banjo and mandolin as well as performing in coffeehouses, bars and writing and recording his first original tunes. Over the past thirty years, he has collaborated with many musical friends in many bands, gigs and festivals. He has recorded 4 CD's along the path and currently working on the 5th. He has taught a mandolin workshop for 7 years at the Winterhawk Bluegrass festival and has a web site www.timblairsflatpickingworkshop.com that is free and designed to help beginner and intermediate players. Paul Brotchie writes, sings and plays songs from his head, his heart and his feet. He pounces on themes of social relevance, croons of love and loss and drives rhythms through the genres of folk, rock, rhythm and blues and country. He is a guitarist. He studied jazz with renowned teacher Charlie Banacos and he sits in on a variety of other instruments. He has performed for President Clinton and has shared the stage with such notables as Don Henley, Crosby Stills and Nash, Carly Simon, Peter Paul and Mary and others. He is from Boston and currently homesteading a patch of land in southern Vermont.

The artists will share original material with the audience and then discuss their songwriting process in an open forum setting. Audience members and the songwriters are encouraged to participate in a lively, in-depth conversation about the creative process of forming original music.

There will be an $8 charge for audience members and $5 for students. Desserts, coffee and tea will be available for purchase.

(White Creek, NY) Pompanuck Farm invites the community to a seasonal celebration and a visit to the Pompanuck Store on Saturday, December 6 from 10:00am – 6:00pm. Enjoy a warm beverage; sample something delicious from the kitchen and chat with your neighbors while you customize some gingerbread at the gingerbread construction table. And of course, don’t miss the Store. Pompanuck Store offers simple, beautiful and practical gifts many of which are made on site or by local artisans and craftspeople.

The store was conceived of as a means of funding Pompanuck programs and as an outlet for Pompanuck-made items. Revenue from the store helps fund Pompanuck Farm’s educational and mentoring programs and other youth organizations and supports the continuing education in environmentally sustainable practices that work in rural Washington County. An underlying ideology of the store is that it is an integrated part of Pompanuck’s educational program, which is inspired by the model of Berea College in Kentucky. Young people of all ages are taught the step-by-step process of making handmade, beautifully crafted products. Most materials for these products come from the land or local recycled resources. Pompanuck hopes to draw on the many teachers of indigenous crafts in our area to expand the line of handmade items and to keep local handcrafts alive. Merchandise includes: Pompanuck’s organic garlic, traditional babkas in three sizes, wood-fired Rosemary bread, clothing adorned with Pompanuck’s logo or vintage quilt blocks, house wares, jewelry, books, and cds from diverse artists who have performed at Pompanuck.

Several items in the store are made from recycled materials. For example, the Birch Tube - at first glance it appears to be a length of birch tree with a smooth papery skin but in fact it is a sturdy, highly versatile cylinder which comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used for everything from extra seating (with an optional sturdy lid) to storing kibble or holding umbrellas. What makes this item unique is that it was designed around available resources. The basic structure consists of a heavy weight cardboard tube or core, the type discarded from paper factories in our area. Another example is the industrial-strength pot holders constructed of recycled bath towels. This useful item is designed using geometric shapes in pleasing patterns and is sure to protect your hands from the heat.

Aislinn O’Connor: Songwriter and bassist Aislinn O’Connor founded The Feral Throes in Johnson City, Tennessee, in 2005 with Scot Hinson on guitar, Mike Brobeck on lead guitar and Sam Quinn of The Everybodyfields on drums (later replaced by Stephen Bashor of 1986). After releasing Envy’s Pretty Sister in 2007 and the EP Blacktop in 2008, core members O’Connor and Hinson relocated to New York. Influenced by rock, post-punk and folk, O’Connor melds melodic bass lines with brooding vocals that tell stories of unshakable pasts, lingering desires and other quirks of the human condition. Ferrilyn Sourdiffe: Ferrilyn has performed with the group Dafé Brudäjo since 1996 as well as various other groups in the area. Her musical interests range from folk to jazz to rock and roll and the blues. Her recordings have been heard on Wanda Fischer's Hudson River Sampler on WAMC and she has been heard live on WSPN's Sunday morning folk show Simpatico and WAMC's Performance Place. She wrote and recorded the song “Oh Alan” for Alan Chartock of WAMC (as well as a phone number jingle) to help promote upcoming fund-drives. She has performed at Caffè Lena, The Harte Lounge at The Egg, the Bennington Center for the Arts and many other venues throughout the tri-state area. Pompanuck Farm Hosts an Evening of Fine Jazz

On Saturday, November 15, Pompanuck Farm will hold its Autumn Pizza/Jazz Big Night! From 6:30pm to 11:00pm, the second of Pompanuck’s music and meal nights of 2008 will happen with enough great music and pizza to take us through the Fall. Come hear fine Jazz and enjoy wood-fired pizza in the Roundhouse at Pompanuck in a benefit night for Pompanuck’s programs and children’s scholarship fund.

Headlining this evening’s jazz is vocalist, Evita Cobo, singing jazz and Brazilian standards Cobo, considered a “pure” singer, has performed in numerous venues during her 18 years as a professional musician. Her New York City debut was to a sold-out crowd at Danny's Skylight Room in 1995, and she has also sung at the prestigious Harvard Club in Boston and The Century Club in New York.
Accompanying Cobo and sharing the stage for additional sets will be Bruce Williamson (piano and horns), Khabu Doug Young (guitar and ukulele), Bob Bowen (bass), and Ron Vincent (drums). Joining them will be Julian Labatt and Kaarin Lysen, accomplished jazz students of Williamson’s from Bennington College. This group of inventive musicians create music with creative vision; a unique and always mesmerizing journey through a diverse musical landscape. There are always surprise musical guests in this Pompanuck event that has been popular for over 15 years.

This event is part of the Concerts With Bite series to benefit Pompanuck Farm Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Reservations are required. Tickets are $25.00 before November 13 ($28 after and at the door) and $15 (and $18 at the door) for students.

Pompanuck Farm Presents Songwriters Showcase November 9th

(White Creek, NY) Pompanuck Farm is presenting a songwriters showcase on Sunday, November 9th at 6:30 pm. The event will highlight four accomplished songwriters from the surrounding region. The artists will share original material with the audience and then discuss their songwriting process in an open forum setting. Audience members and the songwriters are encouraged to participate in a lively, in-depth conversation about the creative process of forming original music.

The featured songwriters will be:

Scott Carrino: Scott spent his early years listening to and singing along with the radio and "playing" percussion on whatever surface that he had nearby. Scott started writing songs the moment he picked up a guitar at age seventeen. Often, in those early days when he attempted to learn a favorite song, a heartfelt song of his own would emerge. He has surrendered to the process and knows that songs will come through him when he is open and able to hear them. Scott continues to play percussion any chance he can and was a founding member of "Conundrum" a local percussion ensemble made up of drumming friends and their drums and a very popular local jam band in the 1990's.

Eric Geoffery: When Eric’s parents realized that he was playing Beethoven by ear at an early age, they decided to stop paying for piano lessons. In a way this was probably quite ironic in that it helped plant some pretty deep seeds of musical rebellion and self expression that to this day are continuing to unfold in his musical and creative discoveries. Eric’s intense curiosity and playful approach to music combined with his passion for the well-being of the planet has resulted in a unique style and an impressive body of work. Currently at play developing a series of earth oriented meditational evolutions through sound and the spoken word, Eric continues his path down the road less trodden.

Deena Chappell Smith: Born into a family of musicians, Deena Chappell Smith has been performing professionally since the age of fourteen. Her vast musical background includes performances in Bluegrass, Rock and Roll, Folk, Swing and Jazz. Deena was also the co-creator of the popular “Musical Chairs” children’s program where she has led countless children of all ages and backgrounds through the songwriting and recording process. However, her career as a singer/songwriter is just beginning. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at Goddard College where she is creating a body of music that reflects her understanding of and experience with the ‘voices’ of archetypal theory. www.deenachappell.com

Tony Lee Thomas: A student of voice from age 4, his vocal endeavors has included classical technique, various choral ensembles, even barbershop and doo-wop quartets. Tony began guitar at seven years old with acoustic folk under Alice Spatz and was soon learning American Appalachian traditionals and the music of popular artists from the '60s. After having developed his own songs with bands like Reed St. and recently Harvest Mountain, Tony discovered that he had compiled a strong bank of original music. This has resulted in the release of "Supernova" in 2006 and "In Love and War" this summer. Among countless nominations and awards, Tony was Nominated "Poet of the Year" by the International Society of Poets 2007. The Afternoon Enrichment Program has been designed in response to enthusiasm for our children’s vacation programs and our delight in offering them. This program will be a continuation of the curriculum we’ve developed over the past two years and will include elements of circus skills training, music, cooking, building and arts and crafts projects under the direction of Lisa Carrino. It will take place outdoors in our beautiful natural setting and indoors in our community center. There will be plenty of physical activity as well as quiet times for more focused work. Homework help and strategy will be available during every session.

The program consists of:

Outside Time: For the first ½ hour after snack the entire group will go outside for big games or smaller group activities. Options will be decided during snack discussion. We might choose kick ball or bombardio as a big game while other folks might be interested in a nature walk or an outdoor building project.

Central Activity: The main activity of the afternoon will take place during the hour between 4 and 5 o’clock. Depending on weather we will practice circus skills, collect natural materials for design projects, cook, make music or work on building and traditional craft projects.

Story/Homework Time: During the final portion of the day children will be given the choice of either listening to a story or beginning their evening homework. Pompanuck staff and volunteers will be available for homework support and to help set up homework checklists to be completed at home.

Tai Ji and Qi Gong Class for Beginners To Start October 7

A beginning class in Tai Ji (Tai Ch) —practiced for centuries in China as a form of meditation, self-healing and self-defense—will start Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30-7:30 pm at Pompanuck Farm Institute in Cambridge, New York. Scott Carrino will offer the six-week series, which is open to beginners and ongoing students who desire to deepen their practice.
Integrating mind and body, Tai Ji and Qi Gong promotes good health by relieving stress, aiding balance and flexibility, and instilling a sense of serenity and relaxed well-being, Tai Ji and Qi Gong consist of gentle, flowing, and meditative movements and can be practiced by anyone of any age and physical condition In the Chinese medical tradition, the practice of Tai Ji is thought to increase the flow of qi (ch’i), or vital energy, along the body’s acupuncture meridians.

A past member of the core faculty at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York, Scott Carrino has been teaching Tai Ji and Qi Gong for 23 years. He taught students at Williams College and Bennington College for many years as well as at the Rasa Yoga Center and Alexander Studio in New York City, the Lan Ting Institute in southern Oregon and at Pompanuck Farm. He continues to study with his teacher and mentor, Master Chungliang Al Huang, and is a teaching member of Master Huang’s Living Tao Foundation. Carrino offers private lessons and retreats as well as ongoing classes for adults, teens and children.

Pompanuck Farm Hosts its Annual Memorial Day Potluck Picnic and Arts Celebration on Sunday, May 25^th.

White Creek, NY. Every Memorial Day since 1994, Pompanuck Farm has hosted a day of community celebration. It is an “open house” event, a tribute to this day of remembrance and to the creativity of the people of our greater community. The public is invited to enjoy this day-long arts festival and tour Pompanuck’s buildings and grounds. Each year an outdoor stage is constructed and tents and tables are set for a community wide potluck sharing.

Over the years the Memorial Day Picnic at Pompanuck has become an annual festival of community building; networking, play, meal sharing and a performance showcase for musicians and artists in varied media whose offerings often reflect the spirit of peace. Some of this year’s performers are: Evita Cobo, Bob Warren, Ferrilyn Sourdiffe, Deena Smith, Bruce Williamson, Athena Burke, Scott Carrino and Friends, a number of Bennington College musicians and ZUELA – a world music ensemble lead by Barry Hyman and consisting of local teenagers who will surely get you dancing!

This event is free and open to the public. Bring a dish and family and friends. This year, Pompanuck will hold its Memorial Day gathering on SUNDAY, MAY 25 –2:00 P.M.until dark. Rain or shine as Pompanuck now has a new event tent!

The Creative Music Workshop (CMW) is a team of
creative musicians exploring the boundaries, textures
and shapes of new music and spontaneous
improvisations.

This team of seven New York musicians has found a
common cause in staging performances of unique
singularity. CMW masterfully renders music with
virtuosic brilliance, high wire ensemble interaction
and soaring lyricism to create a performance of
emotional import and stunning power.

In addition to touring and performing around the
world, CMW musicians teach extensively and have
spearheaded many programs for teens and college level
students in creative music and jazz instruction. By
tranferring the spirit of creative music performance
to education CMW has created a unique approach to
music instruction; a integrated team taught program
that features an ever-evolving curriculum of creative
improvisation, new music composition, and ensemble

Yoon Sun Choi (voice) - Originally from Toronto,
Canada, Yoon has been shaking up the New York City
jazz scene since 2001. More than merely the sum
product of a degree in classical piano, theory and
composition, another in vocal jazz performance, and a
lifetime listening to pop and rock, in her music Yoon
has created a new sound, unclassifiable and fresh, and
yet solidly rooted in a jazz improvising tradition.
Yoon has worked with notable musicians such as Cameron
Brown, Steve Coleman, Mark Dresser, Billy Drummond,
D.D. Jackson, Mat Maneri, Ben Monder, Kenny Werner and
Kenny Wheeler. She has performed in a number of music
festivals all over Canada and has toured all over
North America.

Michael McGinnis (saxophones/reed instruments) -
Originally from Sanford, Maine, saxophonist/clarinetist
Michael McGinnis has rapidly ascended the New York
music scene to become one of the most sought-after players today. He has most recently traveled to Paris as part of Steve Coleman's Aquarius
Ingress which boasted a stellar line-up of current
improvisers (Ravi Coltrane, Tony Malaby, Miguel Zenon
and Chris Speed) and has also performed and/or recorded with the Lonnie Plaxico Group, the Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow Sextet, Ravi Coltrane, Alice
Coltrane, and Art Lande, among others.

Brian Drye (trombone/piano) - Originally from Rhode
Island, he has performed with many famous pop stars
and big bands including The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra,
The Four Tops, Dianne Schuur and Paul Anka. He is a
regular member of "Slavic Soul Party" a Balkan Brass
Band based in NYC and "The Four Bags" a improvising
chamber group. He has recorded for NCM East Records
with several NYC based groups including "SLOG",
"DDYGG", and "The Morpholinos". Brian has toured Japan,
Eastern Europe,Turkey and throughout the US and keeps a busy
performance schedule in NYC playing with original
music groups, klezmer bands, rock bands and
improvisation ensembles.

Bob Bowen (bass) - After moving to NYC more than 12
years ago from Cincinnati Ohio, Bob has performed with
many notable and legendary musicians around the world
including Lee Konitz, Jack Wilkins, Tony Trischka,
Mike Clark, Joe Lovano, John Hicks, Art Lande and Matt
Wilson.

Jacob Sacks (piano) - originally from Michigan, Jacob
has been performing regularly in NYC and europe for
over ten years. He has worked with many famous
musicians including Clark Terry, Paul Motian, Joe
Maneri, Charles Gayle, Eddie Henderson, Christian
McBride, Brian Blade, Tony Malaby, Chris Potter, Mark
Turner, Ben Monder, Adam Rogers, Kenny Wollesen, Gene
Jackson, and Matt Wilson. Also a new CD, "Two Miles a
Day", from Jacob and Eivind Opsvik, featuring Paul
Motian.

Vinnie Sperrazza (drums) - originally from Utica NY,
Vinnie has made a big splash on the NYC scene playing
with an incredibly wide range of musicians including
pianist James Williams.

Khabu Doug Young (guitar/ukulele) - Originally from
the great state of Texas, Khabu has played with a
remarkable assortment creative NYC musicians in many
different ensembles including OK/OK, Slog, and the E
String Band. Recently he has been expanding the realm
of solo ukulele playing and you can see some of that
work at the Ukulele Cabaret (http://www.ukulelecabaret.com)

Joining them will be Bruce Williamson, a founding member of Pompanuck and member of Bennington College music faculty (sax & piano). There will be cameo performances throughout the evening with Williamson’s Bennington College students.

This event is part of the Concerts With Bite series to benefit Pompanuck Farm Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Reservations are required. Tickets are $25.00 before March 25 ($28 after and at the door) and $15 (and $20) for students.

Songwriters Exchange March 9 @ 7:00pm

Pompanuck Farm began the new monthly Songwriters Exchange In February, which by all accounts was a great evening. Pompanuck's Round House offers a beautiful, relaxed and intimate setting for live performances and fluid conversation about the creative process. "Inspired" was the word of the evening as audience members and performers engaged in thinking together about this mysterious subject of songwriting- from individual methods and inspiration, to the song that just "bubbles up" as compared to the concept of crafting a song over time, from the importance of songs that have "moved mountains" in history to the equal importance of the restorative effects of playing for oneself.

Pompanuck invites audience members listen to original music and join in the conversation with area songwriters, Athena Burke, Deena Smith Chappell, Scott Carrino, Ferrilyn Sourdiffe and JoAnne Spies On March 9 at 7:00pm In April, The Exchange will be on Sunday, the 13th.

This monthly evening of (acoustic) performance and conversation is offered to foster an exchange of music and ideas. Participants have the opportunity to present original material, including works in progress, to each other as well as to an audience. These evenings will offer songwriters an environment of respectful listening from both the other presenters and the audience, giving them the chance to talk about the songwriting process as well as present original material with an emphasis on support and exploration and de-emphasizing performance and critique.

Songwriters are encouraged to present songs as solo performances whenever possible to get a sense of the structure of the material (except when necessary as in the case of overlapping lyrics). This is not a workshop, open mic or variety show but an opportunity to share original work and cultivate the creative process. The evening may end with a 10 -15 minute jam.

Each participant will have at least 10-15 minutes to perform a piece and have time for talk, questions and discussion. After a break for refreshments, performers will have the chance to play another song or two.

There will be a $5 charge for audience members. Desserts, coffee and tea will be available for purchase.

Alberto's Great Escape at Pompanuck Farm

On Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00pm, Pompanuck Farm will present Alberto’s Great Escape. A play conceived, written and performed by Carlo Adinolfi and Concrete Temple Theatre.

Elements of dance, clowning, and Commedia dell'Arte bring to life this heart-warming tale, exploring dreams of adventure, the difficulties of leaving home and what it means to be Italian!

The hero of the story is an Italian postal worker who, frustrated by his dead end job, finally reaches the end of his tether and decides to leave home and see the world. However, he is riven by indecision as he finds the gravitational pull of his family and the things he values most more than he can bear. In the confusion of attempting to leave, he bumps his head and enters a strange fantasy world in which he meets the Florida Sunshine Girl. A fantastical journey ensues in which he dances the tarantella, becomes trapped within the walls of his apartment, and battles Strega Cecila. His battle with the witch finally wakes him from his stupor, to find that all along he had the freedom to leave and fulfill his dreams.

Alberto's Great Escape is a charming, touching tale inspired by the profound pathos of the clown combined with the communal folk memory of (Italian born) Carlo and (Italian American) Renee's families. The band 'Le Nozze di Carlo' has created and recorded original Italian folk music for the piece.

Children will love the physical clowning moments in Alberto's Great Escape, while adults will appreciate Alberto's quest and the poetic language.

Please consider joining us at Pompanuck for our first Women’s Retreat Day of 2008 on Sunday, March 2nd. We follow with a general description to guide you in getting the greatest benefits from your retreat day at Pompanuck.

Begin by asking yourself what kind of day you really want. Do you want to bring a friend or do you need to be nurtured in solitude? You can design a day that best suits your needs and time frame.

There is a cover charge of $50 per person for the day. This includes the Tai Ji class, lunch and beverages, art class, all-day use of the sauna, the grounds, the art studio and the Round House. In addition to these activities you may schedule a massage, a pedicure, or a facial, or any combination thereof. For those of you who cannot spend the entire day there is a $30 fee for a half day. Between scheduled activities you are free to sauna, walk the trails, breathe the mountain air, knit and drink tea in the upstairs great room, or take a nap.

9:30 - Arrival: Participants arrive and gather in the Round House to check in and enjoy a hot beverage.
10:00 – 11:00 Gentle Tai Ji class with Scott Carrino - appropriate for beginners.
10:00 – 4:00 Body work appointments. Call 677–5552.
12:00 – 2:00 Lunch in the Round House Kitchen.
4:00 – 5:00 Moving and Painting to Music in the art studio.
6:00 – Closing. Enjoy a beverage and some nibbles as you wind down the day. Sense the feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation you have experienced. Ah.

Pompanuck Farm is hosting a monthly Songwriters Exchange beginning on Sunday, February 10 from 7-10pm.

Come and hear live, original music from area singer/songwriters and participate in discussion on the creative process. Hosted by Scott Carrino and Ferrilyn Sourdiffe, the Exchanges will be held at the Round House at Pompanuck, 494 Chestnut Hill Road, Cambridge, NY.

February 10 performers will be:
Stephen Alcorn, Deena Smith Chappell, David Lawlor, Bruce Wheat, Scott and Ferrilyn.

Pompanuck Farm invites children of elementary and middle school age for a week (February18-22) filled with art, music, nature studies and play, led by artist and educator, Lisa Carrino and the Pompanuck Staff, Kids will leave the program with beautiful artwork and new and exciting physical skills. Massage Workshop for Couples and Friends

On Saturday, January 23rd from 9:30am - 4pm, Pompanuck Farm will offer a Couples and Friends Massage Workshop taught by Lisa and Scott Carrino. The Carrinos have been licensed as Massage Therapists since 1986 and have taught popular massage workshops and retreats over the years. Their teaching style is relaxed, informative and fun. They will be assisted by Ashley Bridge, a graduate of the Finger Lakes School of Massage and a Licensed Massage Therapist. Participants will learn to give and receive a simple, relaxing massage with an emphasis on general techniques for sore muscles and joint flexibility.

Learn how giving a massage can be as relaxing and rewarding as receiving one. Participants can discover new ways to care for a partner and find greater understanding of their own and a partner’s physical bodies by communicating through touch.

The tuition for the day is $75 per person and includes a sumptuous vegetarian lunch and refreshments and a take-home massage handout. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a robe, a towel, loose shorts and a tank top or sports bra (for women).

The Circular Calendar

Artist and Educator, Jessica Howard began making circular calendars many years ago, to show the children at Hiland Hall School that the year is actually round, that seasons of the year have definite relationships with each other. In the circular calendar you can see the solstices crossing the diameter with each other and you notice the important days in each. People of many cultures have used the circular calendar to show the cycles and rhythms of the year and it offers us a different view of time passing. We started the tradition of round calendars at Pompanuck a few years ago when we recognized that the blue prints of our Round House reflected the radial nature of the circular calendar. We love to look back at past years and see what has happened in 1/365^th of the Pompanuck pie.

Please join us for this day of looking differently at a year of time.

Tai Ji as a Path to Centered Living and Sustainability

Tai Ji is an ancient martial art and philosophy rooted in Chinese Taoism. It is practiced in slow and graceful forms using gentle movements and relaxed breathing. It is effective in developing strength, balance and flexibility in the body, mind and heart. Daily practice of Tai Ji promotes improved health by lubricating joints, lowering blood pressure, deepening the breath, increasing the flow of chi throughout the body and instilling serenity and well-being.

The sages of ancient China considered the Five Elements - Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, Earth to be at the heart of health, philosophy, sciences, poetry, environmental design, arts and culture. For thousands of years this has remained so.

In his teaching, Scott focuses on Tai Ji principles of the Five Elements, yin/yang balance, rooting, centering, alignment, and communication. He explores the connections between the yielding, nurturing, quiet and reflective energies of yin energy and the active, creative, outwardly moving energy of yang energy.

Combining exercises and metaphors from the ancient Tai Ji classics with contemporary interpretations, participants in his classes, workshops and retreats discover the relationships of steadiness/unevenness, giving/receiving, and action/inaction. He works with a variety of exercises from Tui Shou, the Tai Ji art of relating and working with others and with the concepts and practice living and relating through the Tao.

Tuition for these workshops is $55 per person, per day and includes a light lunch.
